Roderick C. Brask
[attr="class","dropfrumbodytxt"]Roderick Brask has never been the kindest of people; not even as a child. Corvus and Gloriana Brask were often cold and distant to their only son. He had the traditional values of pureblooded society instilled upon him from a very young age, to the point where he was often forbidden from leaving the estate in order to avoid interaction with the muggle children of the nearby village. He experienced a strong feeling of isolation every day as a child and would often wish for a friend to play with. This, in turn, caused young Roderick to mature far faster than any child should. He left for Hogwarts when he was eleven and was sorted into Slytherin. The closest thing to a congratulation he received from his parents was a note saying, "Do not shame House Brask."
In his seven years at Hogwarts, Roderick slowly broke out of the isolated shell he'd been within for so long. He began to make some friends among the "acceptable" circle of people… mostly meaning pureblooded Slytherins and Ravenclaws. In his fifth year at school, he did meet and fall in love with a Ravenclaw girl named Justine Clarke. Roderick was nearly crazy for her; though he knew that it wouldn't happen. Justine Clarke, after all, was a muggleborn. His strict parents would never approve of the match. Still, he decided that a distant friendship would be far better than not having this woman in his life at all. So he stayed further from her than he would have liked, only speaking to her in passing. This would remain a lifelong regret for him… for Justine was one of the many students that died in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Roderick also the “luxury” of being in the year above the famous Harry Potter. He remembers the fury he felt when Dumbledore essentially screwed Slytherin House out of their hard-earned win of the House Cup. He remembered in his third year when he saw his classmates being petrified by the monster within the Chamber of Secrets. He remembers being escorted from class to class by his professors when Sirius Black managed to break into the castle. He remembers rolling his eyes in annoyance when, of course, Harry Potter ended up in the Triwizard tournament. Of course, it was summer after his fifth year when much changed for him in his home life. After all, the Dark Lord had returned… and his parents were loyal Death Eaters. He spent most of his summers in isolation, sitting alone while his parents went to meetings and carried out the tasks given to them by Lord Voldemort. In his sixth year he joined Professor Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad, mostly at the behest of his parents. In his seventh year, he stood among his peers as they looked at the dead body of Albus Dumbledore. Roderick had never liked the headmaster much, but he never would have wished death upon him.
After Roderick graduated, he got a job in the Wizengamot Administrative Services. While he was expected to loyally serve the Dark Lord by his parents, he was lucky enough to never be held in high enough esteem to receive the Dark Mark. After all, he had just graduated one year prior. While his magic was strong, his talents lied more in diplomacy than combat. Roderick felt nothing but relief when Voldemort was killed in May of 1998. Well… somewhat. He was absolutely heartbroken when he learned that Justine had perished in the battle. His parents were some of the first Death Eaters to be arrested and tried after the Battle of Hogwarts. In a way, Roderick felt a sense of satisfaction as he watched his parents be dragged off to Azkaban. It was almost as if he was getting revenge on them for so many years of them not caring. Now he was a sole heir to the Brask Estate and fortune.
Roderick had no desire to stay in England anymore. His name carried the shame of his parents’ decisions. His childhood home no longer felt the same; not after so many of the Dark Lord’s followers had set foot within it. So he sold the Brask Estate and moved to the United States a week after Justine’s funeral, where he could have the opportunity to start anew. It wasn’t like he had anything left in England, really, so he never once felt regret with decision. When he immigrated to the USA, he immediately applied for a position within the Department of Justice at the MACUSA. His desire was to become a judge; it always had been. However, he settled for being trained as a lawyer for the time being. He enjoyed being around his coworkers… they didn’t know his past and they didn’t seem to care. While in his twenties, he still fought the lingering prejudices that he was taught growing up. To this day, he still struggles with this at times. He cares less about blood status now and more about how effective and useful someone is to society. He has no patience for those who waste their lives and abilities and no patience for stupidity.
Roderick met the then nineteen year old Emeline Perryn when she joined the Department of Law Enforcement. She was a pureblooded witch with a faintly similar background to him. She too had grown up with elitist parents who ended up imprisoned. Though her parents were imprisoned for the torture and murder of the family of a muggle boy she had dated in the summers of her Ilvermorny years. A year later, the two were married, despite the eight year age difference and the fact that they had only really dated for about nine months. Roderick just knew that the two of them were meant to spend the rest of their lives together, so he didn’t see a point in wasting any time. He was twenty-nine-years-old when his eldest children, Aetheria Emeline Brask and Valerius Roderick Brask, were born. Five years later, his youngest daughter Justinia Katherine Brask was born. He did he best to raise his children with more care than either of his parents showed him. He would take time out of his busy schedule to play with the twins, never failing to throw in a lesson on their values on occasion. When Roderick was forty-five, he was promoted to Head of the Department of Justice. He takes his job very seriously and has so far done a good job running the Department of Justice over the past four years.
