BESTIARY
[break]Here you can find out about all the magical creatures and magical abilities. Tiers are for pricing and how common it is. At PJ your first character can have two free abilities - though only one of them can be a tier 3. Any additional abilities for that character or characters after must be paid for.

An Animagus (pl. Animagi) is a witch or wizard who can morph him or herself into an animal at will. It is a learned, rather than hereditary skill, unlike those of a Metamorphmagus. Information on Animagi is taught to Ilvermorny students during their third year Transfiguration class.
It takes skill, practice, and patience for wizards and witches to become Animagi. The process of becoming an Animagus is long and arduous, and has the potential to backfire and cause the transformation to go horribly wrong. Many witches and wizards simply feel that their time might better be employed in other ways, as the skill is of limited practical use unless one has a great need of disguise or concealment. Part of the process by which one becomes an Animagus is holding the leaf of a mandrake in their mouth for an entire month. Once the initial training is over, an Animagus can change at will, with or without a wand.
Animagi can only take on the form of one specific animal. This animal form is not chosen by the wizard, but determined by their personality and inner traits. It may also be that the full-bodied Patronus may reveal what a witch or wizard would turn into if they were an Animagus. An Animagus in animal form is also not restrained by the lifespan limit of the creature that they otherwise transform into.
Each Animagus bears an identifying mark on their animal form that is caused by something on their human body. This may be a physical trait like dental structure, or an acquired trait such as glasses. If an Animagus undergoes a major physical change, such as the loss of a limb, their animal form will also reflect that.

Broomless Flight (unsupported flight) is a spell that allows a witch or wizard to fly without the use of a broomstick or other form of support.
Unsupported flight is different from levitation, which only allows objects to fly a few feet off the ground and does not work on humans. Unsupported flight was specifically designed for human use thus giving one the ability to fly from far up without the aid of an object. It is unknown how long a person can stay airborne or if it works over vast distances.
It is a relatively new charm (starting with Voldemort) and as such is still rarely seen. Wizards and witches prefer brooms or apparition.

Legilimency is the act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. A person who practises this art is known as a Legilimens. Muggles might call this "mind-reading," but practitioners disdain the term as naive. The opposite of Legilimency is Occlumency, which may be used to shield one's mind from the invasion and influence of a Legilimens.
The most advanced Legilimens can perform Legilimency nonverbally and wandlessly, but less talented practitioners must use the incantation Legilimens to enter their victim's mind. If a target is not skilled in Occlumency.

A Metamorphmagus (pl. Metamorphmagi) is a witch or wizard with the ability to change his or her physical appearance at will, rather than requiring Polyjuice Potion or a spell like the rest of the wizarding population. They are extremely rare.
Unlike Animagi, Metamorphmagi can take a wide variety of forms, changing sex and age, potentially looking like anyone at all, or even just changing a part of their appearances, such as the shape of their noses. Metamorphmagi can take the full appearance of an animal but can struggle transitioning to have more legs/arms, unlike Animagi.
Also, a Metamorphmagus is born, not made; it is not a skill that can be learned. There also seems to be a degree of heritability. The ability presents very early in life, and causes a lot of confusion with new parents.

Occlumency is the act of magically closing one's mind against Legilimency. It is ancient, and has existed since medieval times. It can prevent a Legilimens from accessing one's thoughts and feelings, or influencing them. A person who practises this art is known as an Occlumens.
Occlumency is not part of the normal curriculum and appears to be a rare and difficult skill.

Half-giants are beings with some, but not a total, amount of giant heritage or blood, as well as part human blood. For instance, a human might have a Giant mother and a wizard father or vice versa. However, the logistics of a normal-sized witch bearing a half-giant baby are difficult if not impossible to imagine, let alone the logistics of this sort of conception.
All known Half-giants had magical blood, and were capable of producing magic, traits they received from their witch or wizard ancestors. It is unknown as to whether they will still have magic if the human parent was a Muggle; they may receive magic from the giant parent, but as there have been no known non-magical half-giants a definite answer cannot be deduced. From their giant family they usually retained a large height and build, they were usually considered extremely tall by human standards and short by giant standards. They also retained the natural resistance to most types of magical attacks from their giant blood.

A half-goblin is a cross-breed between a goblin, whose ancestry accounts for their diminutive size, and a human. It is unknown if goblins can breed with Muggles, but since very few Muggles ever become aware that goblins exist, this is a remote possibility. As they are usually part-wizard they can control magic with a wand and can attend wizarding schools to learn how. It is not impossible that, properly trained, they command a number of goblin magical arts, but, if so, it is likely for full goblins to be unwilling to provide such training, effectively preventing their part-human offspring from performing their kind of magic. Many half-goblins benefit from intelligence and wit inherited from their Goblin ancestors.
It is possible that certain spells and potions do not work on Half-goblins. For instance, it is unknown if Half-goblins can use Polyjuice Potion as this particular potion is designed for human transformations only, and therefore does not work on other beings. For instance, Polyjuice Potion is useless to any Half-Giant. However, because the potion is known to be effective on Part-Veelas, if their Veela ancestry goes back at least two generations, it is likely to for any Half-goblin whose goblin ancestor is not their mother or father.
As half-breeds, half-goblins fall into the same prejudices that other half-breeds suffer.

A half-Veela is a cross-breed between a human (normally a wizard or witch) and a Veela. It is unknown if Veela can breed with Muggles, and it is unlikely that a Muggle would ever learn of the existence of Veela, thus most or all half-Veela will inherit magical ability from their fathers.
From their mother, they gain some Veela traits, such as breathtaking beauty and the ability to entrance men supernaturally. It is unknown if half-Veela are able to shape-shift into bird-like creatures as full Veela can. Also, they age unlike full Veela.
Full-Veela males do not exist, but the traits of Full-Veela can be passed down to male children.

A part-vampire is a being with both human and vampire traits. Part-vampires are therefore a type of half-breed, with human and vampire ancestors. This has been confirmed because it is proved that vampires are related to humans since they are featured in the M's Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.

A Seer is a gifted wizard or witch who has the ability to see into the future with their Inner Eye. Seers predict prophecies, which are then recorded and stored in the Hall of Prophecy. True Seers are extremely rare.
Centaurs are Seers with their own brand of Divination, which differs from that of humans.
*A Naming Seer is a wizarding occupation undertaken by wizards with the ability to see the future. A Naming Seer will predict a newborn child's future and suggest an appropriate name, generally in exchange for a "hefty payment of gold". Naming Seers are becoming increasingly rare in modern times, as many parents dislike receiving hints of their child's potential future. Those that do use Naming Seers often find that they worry themselves on the way home afterwards, and often wish they had never heard the prediction in the first place!

A vampire is a magical hominid that is famed for biting people on the neck and sucking their blood. They are part of the family of beings known as the Living Dead.
They are usually pale and gaunt with sharp fangs for puncturing the throat.
Vampires have an aversion to garlic and can be kept at bay by its presence. They drink blood, though they are able to eat things such as pasties, and Honeydukes sells lollipops that taste like blood, presumably for vampires to use.

A werewolf is a human being who, upon the complete rising of the full moon, becomes a fearsome and deadly near-wolf. This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, also known as werewolfry. Werewolves appear in the form of a wolf but, there are distinctions between them and regular wolves.
A mixture of powdered silver and dittany applied to a fresh bite will seal the wound and allow the victim to live on as a werewolf, although tragic tales are told of witches and wizards begging for death rather than becoming werewolves. The Wolfsbane Potion, invented by Damocles, allows the werewolf to keep their human mind during transformation.
A werewolf cannot choose whether or not to transform and will no longer remember who they are and would kill even their best friend given the opportunity once transformed. Despite this, they are able to recall everything they have experienced throughout their transformation upon reverting to their human form.
Because werewolves only pose a danger to humans, companionship with animals whilst transformed has been known to make the experience more bearable as the werewolf has no-one to harm and will be less willing to harm themselves.
Contrary to what the Muggle world believes, werewolves are not affected by silver, except in that it can be used to prevent death and merely closes their wounds to prevent bleeding in a severe werewolf attack.

This ability enables the person to understand the speech or emotions of animal life forms. This ability is very uncommon.
Zoolinguists show their abilities in an animal-language (like Parseltongue). The person is only able to understand one genus of animal, for example.
You can inherit the ability or you can learn it - both methods are very tricky and in some cases people find the language easy to understand but impossible to speak. Or the other way around. However if you have the innate ability, it is easier to pick up. You can also use the language to talk to other people - though only helpful if they can understand you and speak it back.
