The school year had started and Kinsley was still trying to settle in. Even though she had attended Ilvermorny, that had been years ago. Not much had changed, but there was still some getting used to again. It was bittersweet to be honest. Kinsley had some awesome memories at Ilvermorny. She had a lot of fun as a student, but she wasn’t that same girl anymore. A lot had changed since then and not necessarily for the better. She figured not everyone could get their happily ever after, but she never thought it would be her… and not so soon. The idea of coming back to Ilvermorny to teach wasn’t such a bad one, but she figured she’d be in her old age… and she’d be teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts or something…
Even so, the past couldn’t be changed, nor could her present. Waving her wand, she added a couple more books to the pile as it floated in front of her. Kids these days… Haven’t they heard of putting things back? Walking through the rows of shelves, Kinsley flicked her wand this way and that way, directing the books to their rightful places. It was quiet since it was dinner time. Kinsley didn’t feel much for being around others. She often took her meal in her private quarters.
Finally, putting the last of the books away, Kinsley made it back towards the desk. She grabbed a chair and sat. She let out a breath as pain radiated through her lower back and into her legs. She had pushed herself too far and had been on her feet too long. She was still getting used to being limited by her injuries. She tried not to let the pain show in her face, but it was hard not to. She was just glad no one was around to see her. Leaning forward, she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to regulate her breathing. She tried not to think about the pain, but her head felt dizzy. She might have to check in with the nurse.
She didn’t know how much time had passed, but when she heard footsteps, she forced herself to push past the pain and stand. What did this person want?

✶✴ Elena had a bit of a reputation for being a scatter brain. She tried, so so hard, to keep everything in order. She had lists of things she needed to do - but then, she also had lists of her lists and then lists of those lists until she never really knew which list she was supposed to be looking at. There had been many members of her friends and family who had also offered to lend a hand and while she appreciated their support she also felt a little low about the whole thing. Not to mention it was a contributing factor to the failure of her marriage.
She had spent the morning running classes as normal, getting to chat to her classes and find out how they were doing was the best part of her job. Making each lesson as personal as she could so that not only her class would remember it, but she would as well. A third year class were covering mandrakes and the screams - despite the earmuffs - had given her a rotten headache, and probably most of the class too. But there was something about the mandrakes squishy faces that had made them all push through the wails when they were all asked to do a quick sketch of the biggest mandrake. It was a speed sketch, but that didn't mean Elena's ears had stopped ringing.
After lunch was more classes but these were the older students, ones that Elena had given a list of jobs to carry out in the greenhouses. Once a week the older years were given a herbology lesson in plant care and that meant simply, they tidied up the greenhouses. It was a nice chance for Elena to go to each student and have a proper conversation about their grades and where they wanted to go with Herbology. Fortunately, Elena was a lot stricter with her students records than her own lists. Her office was kept neat and tidy and everything had its place. Each student had a selection of parchment with all of their grades marked. Elena's ex-husband had charmed them all to automatically update when the student's homework was marked. So Elena simply had to pull it out and look at it when she had her chats.
Then came dinner and Elena realised that she had no more classes. Usually she had a late class with the seventh years to look at plants that only bloomed at night. But the sky was clear and the astronomy professor had asked to postpone all other classes. Which was fine with Elena. More time to read! Speaking of, she really needed to return that library book.
Making her way down the corridors that twisted this way and that she beelined for the Library - okay maybe she took one wrong turn but she was distracted by a portrait. Reaching the door she pushed it open gently into the silence of the biggest collection of books she'd ever seen; and she had a lot of books! With a smile she walked up to Miss Little, the librarian. She and Kinsley had talked quite a few times, mostly about books. It was nice, actually, to talk to someone who didn't know you all too well. Thought she suspected Kinsley might have been warned by some of the other Professors who didn't spend too much time around Elena. They were nice, courteous, but not all of them she would call her friend. Maybe just one or two.
Stepping up she smiled and waved at her friend moving closer before she suddenly stopped in her tracks. I forgot the book, she laughed and shrugged her shoulders. I'll bring it tomorrow, she promised but she was pretty sure they both knew that tomorrow didn't actually mean tomorrow.
How are you? Gosh I feel like we haven't caught up in ages! It's so quiet in here, I guess everyone is star gazing! Elena paused and brushed some of her hair back behind her ear. Mind if I join you?
