Faith smiled as she watched the faces of her two-year-olds’ faces light up when they saw the Winter Market. She was on double duty today; Melchiorre wanted to come with them, but ended up swamped with homework assignments to grade. As much as Faith would have loved to help him, physics were completely lost on her. She just didn’t understand the complex patterns of numbers and letters and symbols. He’d tried once in the past to teach her the basics, but it just resulted in complete and utter failure. The same happened when she tried to teach him some piano; he just couldn’t remember what keys went with what note and what symbol on the staff meant a long note or a shorter one. The most he could do musically was sing songs by ear. Granted, he didn’t have a terrible singing voice. It just wasn’t as extensively trained as hers.
“Mommy look!” Serenity shouted as she pointed to a stall with tons of beautiful flowers of every color. Faith let out a laugh and bent down next to the two girls. Serenity was the more outgoing and vocal of the twins so far; Anne was much more reserved and shy. But, of course, they were in the terrible twos. While Serenity was more prone to tantrums, Anne was more prone to crying. She just hoped she could get some shopping done here without any meltdowns. If only she had another hand to help her out… oh well. It wasn’t the first time Faith had to watch both of them at once and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. Knowing Melchiorre, he’d make it up to her later.
Faith looked around and smiled. It had been so long since she’d come to a Winter Market. The last time she did was before she left Julliard. Had it really been fifteen years ago? Time really flew… She looked between the two girls and smiled almost teasingly. “So, where do you two want to go first? Do you want to help mommy pick out a gift for daddy?” Serenity was the first to nod her head. Anne followed suit not even a moment later. Faith stood up and took the hands of her daughters. She looked around the Winter Market, trying to decide where she wanted to go first. If only she could remember where the toy stalls were… that could occupy them a little bit. She didn’t plan on buying toys for them today. She did, however, plan on seeing what they really wanted and coming back another day to get them as gifts from Santa Claus. She let out a faint, ‘hmm’ as she thought about what stalls to hit up first.

✶✴ Elena loved the holidays - any holidays really; winter, summer, spring, fall, they were all so different and all so exciting! New flowers were coming into bloom, even in the coldest months, and she could sit in her greenhouse with her drinks and watch as they all came to life. The winter holidays, though, were just that extra bit special. The season of goodwill to all people - that's what they said. There was warms even in the cold and not just from the heaters and fires that people huddled around. People seemed a little bit friendlier - until you asked them about giving gifts and then they became stressed out.
The winter market was an annual thing and Elena had tried to attend every year. Not only to look at what the locals were creating, but to mingle in the with no-maj's. They were just funny! The way they talked about 'holiday magic' when it conveniently started to snow. It was adorable to watch. Equally so was the amount of children wrapped up in all of their layers - worried parents making sure their kid wasn't going to get sick. The amount of bouncing bobble hats Elena had seen in the first ten minutes was enough to last her a lifetime and yet every stall she walked around there was more.
She wasn't really looking for anything in particular - she didn't have a husband to buy something for anymore so she was there purely for her own selfish indulgent. And why not? She deserved it after all!
As she looked around she could smell the wonderful flowers nearby as well as the hot food and the copious amounts of cinnamon - because apparently that was a holiday smell. It was that warm feeling all over again despite it being a little chilly. It was then she spotted her friend and co-worker Faith with her two lovely children! With a huge smile on her face she waved to them hoping to be spotted in the crowd. And she was, as the two little girls waved back and pointed to her for Faith to see. Meeting somewhere in the middle of the path she looked down at the two girls.
Gosh, don't you two look ready for the holidays! she began, pointing at their warm clothes. Very grown up. Have you been looking for what you'd like santa to bring you? she asked. She was pretty sure they were still at the age of santa, and she didn't want to spoil it by saying 'parents'. She looked up at Faith and gave her a knowing smile, how hard it must be to secretly buy things and hide them from your children.
Enjoying the market? she asked her friend, wondering if Melchiorre had been too busy to come out. What a shame. Still, it was nice to have some girl time. Have you eaten yet? I saw a stall back there that looked like it did pancakes to go?
`TAG: FAITH QUINN i hope this is okay, i figured they probably knew each other since faith joined the school so elena would have invited them all round for dinner at least once!~

“Mommy!” Serenity suddenly called out, yanking on Faith’s tan pea coat. The two-year-old pointed towards someone within the crowds of people. Faith’s eyes lit up when she saw her coworker and friend, Elena Ma, standing in the middle of the path waving to them. Faith smiled and waved back to her. Faith may not have been working at Ilvermorny for long, but Elena had quickly taken her and her family under her wing. Elena had had the Rossi family over for dinner on more than one occasion, and vice versa. Faith felt both of her arms being tugged as both Serenity and Anne said, “Come on, mommy!” She laughed and walked with her two kids through the crowd to meet up with Elena. Perhaps this could be a good thing. Maybe she’d end up with addition eyes to help ensure that she twins didn’t run off somewhere and get lost.
“Elena! Hi!” Faith said. “And here I thought I’d be all alone with the girls today. You enjoying a break from grading too?”
“Gosh, don't you two look ready for the holidays! Very grown up. Have you been looking for what you'd like Santa to bring you?” she asked the twins. Serenity was the first to avidly shake her head, a large smile filling her face. Anne nodded along with her twin. Faith chuckled at the reaction. She and Elena exchanged knowing smiles. They could still keep the magic of Santa Claus alive with the girls for a few more years yet. Part of her almost wished she could still believe in him. The first Christmas she spent with Melchiorre after she told him she was a witch was rather strange for him. After all, she was able to explain to him exactly what spells and charms Santa could use to travel around the world and deliver presents to all the children of the world. That was actually his first question when it came to magic and Christmastime. Not anything specific about candles or how wizards celebrated Christmas. Nope… it was, ‘Is Santa Claus real?’
“They have a couple of ideas,” Faith said, lightly ruffling Anne’s hair. “But we’re going to look around so they can give Santa more clues.”
“Enjoying the market?” Elena asked. “Have you eaten yet? I saw a stall back there that looked like it did pancakes to go?” Faith looked down at the girls, who eyes went wide the minute the word ‘pancakes’ was said. Faith wasn’t ashamed that her reaction was actually a little similar. Pancakes were a guilty pleasure of hers… a guilty pleasure that the girls had apparently inherited from her.
“That sounds good to me,” Faith said. “Mel’s not here to complain that I’m not giving the girls ‘actual food.’ I’ll take advantage of that.”

✶✴ Elena had always wanted to be a teacher, despite her scatter brain making her go down several avenues before arriving at ilvermorny for the job. She loved working with children and tried to make her lessons as hands-on and engaging as she could. When she had been at school sitting down and doing nothing had caused her to fidget and grow rowdy and often got her into trouble. She was awful in writing exams but excelled in practical ones. She knew that she hadn't been the only child to learn that way so she always made sure her lessons catered to those. It was easy to sit down in history of magic and just write essay after essay, but with Herbology you really had to get in and feel the textures of the leaves and listen to the sounds of the plants to find out if they were getting the right nutrients.
The one downside though was the marking. Marking all of the work that children presented - another reason why Elena liked to be more hands on was that her homework could be looking after a plant for a week rather than writing an essay. But she had to have her students prepared so sometimes essays were required and she'd have to read through every one trying to understand what was going on in the head of the child. It was a lot easier with the sixth and seventh years but the first years ended up writing mountains of nothingness. Complete gibberish that she'd have to translate and then correct.
I thought I'd give them all an A, she teased, knowing full well that all teachers had thought of doing that once or twice.
She watched the children with glee, knowing how special Christmas time was to them. It was pretty big at Ilvermorny, but they were also working on being more inclusive for those not celebrating. That didn't mean the huge tree had been abandoned - oh no - they had just allowed more space for everyone else. She couldn't wait for the girls to get to see it one day, hopefully she would still be teaching in her old age.
Laughing lightly she pointed to the stall selling the food and wandered over. Oh please, you know he couldn't say no to pancakes! Elena laughed, remembering the time he had had second helpings of pudding when the had come to visit. But she understood that you couldn't live on pancakes alone. Looking at all the different flavours, Elena hummed to herself before ordering a chocolate covered pancake.
You girls order whatever you like, my christmas treat to you, she said to all three of them, taking her chocolate pancake and rolling it up so she could take a bite out of one end.
