Alfie gritted his teeth at the letter in his hand. It was a summons, to come to the congress and be interviewed. It didn't say why, but Alfie could hazard a guess. There had been a couple of unexplained deaths over the halloween period and of course all arrows pointed to vampire activity. Which made sense, because lets be honest, halloween was the one time a year where they could go out unquestioned in the real world. They could spend time with civilisation - though some vampires' would argue that civilisation had fallen a long time ago. Alfie, fortunately, hadn't lived quite that long. But the letter was certainly not a welcome one. Unfortunately at the end of the last wizarding war, it was declared that all magical beings (non-humans was the word used at the time, but it quickly became a derogatory term) were to reveal themselves to the government. There had been riots and protests but in the end the message still stood - magical beings had the potential to be dangerous so tabs were, apparently, necessary.
It also seemed necessary to drag Alfie into the government building at the drop of a hat because they suspected foul play. Alfie had told them, time and again, that he wasn't the one who kept tabs on vampires and actually if it was a vampire it was probably not going to be a registered one. But, regardless, he wasn't really allowed to say no. So, grabbing his jacket he pocketed the letter and made his way to the congress. Being a non-magical magical-being was a strain in most situations. The worst being the fact he still had to use the no-maj visitor entrance because he didn't have a wand. He had been tempted to buy one just to make life easier, even if he could never use it.
Walking up to the receptionist he placed the letter down in front of her. She smiled and in her sickly sweet customer voice she pointed him in the right direction. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement offices, Alfie's second home. He smiled to himself and made his way through the double doors into the busy corridor. It seemed he wasn't the only vampire who had been asked to come in. Sitting down on the chair he waited his turn before he was invited into a room. He assumed it was usually used as an interrogation room - maybe it still was and Alfie hadn't realised. Sitting in an empty chair he sat and waited, and waited and just as he began to feel forgotten the door opened and in walked a young wizard.
Look at that, the internship program is up an' running, he commented, looking over the appearance of the man. He looked young, but Alfie was very aware that age did not constitute ability.
