From the moment he blinked open his cool, blue-grey eyes in that hospital on 6th Street, it was obvious to Ben, and everyone else around him, that "daddy knew best". Not-too-later on, he learned that this fact was not to be disputed. If his father wanted something, it was done in that manner, in that order, to the precise detail. Hence the reason Ben now works a fancy-pants job in the Magical Congress, instead of living with his friends in a spacious flat, preparing for the starving artist lifestyle they'd dream about.
In fact, said friends (he'd lost contact) were probably in New York right now. Whats the year? 2026? 7? Ben had honestly stopped caring when he had himself chained to The Department of International Magical Cooperation. It isn't a boring job per say, even if he is just the assistant to the head, it just isn't the job for him. But father dearest had made it clear that Benjamin's eyes should be set on IMC since school had begun, so that's where they'd stayed. Sure, there was a part of him that, while he walked the school halls, that hoped that maybe his life wasn't already set in stone. Maybehis father would let him run off to New York with his not-boyfriend (or at least that's what he told his parents) and live off his inheritance money till he ran out. And maybe pigs would fly.
Ben believes that his dad has his best interests at heart, but keeping his son on such a tight leash took a serious toll on their relationship. The constantly looming oversight of his father had molded his life into a model of his own, producing only very few outcomes that Benjamin could be proud of. The first were his grades, as he was too scared to fail, and the second being his rebellious spirit. His mother, proudly, likes to remind Ben that he got that from her.
His mother and father sit on opposite ends of the spectrum, and its a wonder to Ben they've be able to stand each other for 29 years, much less love one another. He's still a little skeptical about the romantic connection, but his mother has assured him more than once that it was there. Was... The pair had met years ago at a cafe in France. His mother was a waitress, and his father a business man on a trip, trying to catch a break from phone calls that were just a little too boring for a 24 year old in Paris. Anastasia, his mother, was engaged to a wealthy upperclassman by the name of Issac Amor. Instead of going through with the ceremony, she fled and flew back to the Americas with Henri, his father, and traded one rich lifestyle for another
Ana has tried her best to keep Ben's thoughts toward his father positive, constantly throwing stories at him about how in love they were, and how sweet he was to her. It's done little to sooth his growing annoyance, but he appreciates the effort. He's always had a soft spot for his mother, finding he has more in common with her.
The one thing he was never able to pick up was Ana's sense of humility. The way she carries herself, with such kindness and warmth, is something he's never gotten the hang of. Try as he might, it's hard for Ben to shake the pretty-rich-boy feel. And it doesn't help that he's grown up with a slight sense of entitlement and a little too much money. When his mom's free spirit mixed with his dad's controlling personality, it created a rather disastrous combination.
Ben doesn't mind bending the rules. When his father's not around to tell him otherwise, he prefers to do what he wants, when he wants. He doesn't think highly of people who go out of their way to work against his wishes, or work against him at all for that matter. He can manage to keep a small circle of people happy, cue the friends from Ilvermorny, but isn't the best at enteraining a large clump of acquaintances. Most people write him off as a bad guy before even getting to know him (he does seem rather awful to be fair) or are just too put off by his personality to bother with any sort of relationship. To return the favor, Ben doesn't make an effort either. Unless of course, you catch his eye.
After his not-boyfriend Anton and him broke up, Ben hasn't bothered dating. He does one night stands, that's it. Relationships require time and effort, and he'd much rather work on securing his dad's inheritance. Simple one time things are enough to satisfy him at the moment.
And it's not like he's at a loss for guys to pick up. Having a pretty face helps.
