Undeterable. That is perhaps the best summary of Toby. Once he's set his mind on something that he wants nothing can stop him. He will do whatever it takes to achieve his goal, no matter the cost to himself or others. That being said, whatever does in fact mean whatever. There are few codes he won't break to accomplish his goals with the only limitation that he won't actually kill you. He will make you close to dead, though, no matter if it will tear the very skin from his body or no matter who he has to get through and what he has to do to them. Toby is also pretty self-interested. He doesn't believe in handouts and, while he can be very helpful, he'll only ever help out if there's something in the deal for him to benefit from. There isn't a job he will do without some form of reciprocation, and his diligence makes him a very hard worker. Once he has his sights set on a goal he doesn't back down, an admirable trait in any person. But, it can be a double-edged sword in more ways that one.
Toby is naturally proficient at reading people, and he's extremely perceptive, to the point where it's very easy for him to deduce where someone is and what their behavior patterns are from small amounts of information about them. While he is not without fault and does make mistakes, particularly with unpredictable people, he's extremely smart in this sense and in few others, and he uses his ability to predict people for his own benefit. He is clever enough to not let on to himself figuring them out, and he is careful to let them always think they have the upper hand on him whether it be in the real world or just simple conversation. He adapts quickly, as well, his vesatility is one of his strongest traits.
When it comes to interpersonal relations, Toby isn't the most proficient. He doesn't have a wide range of emotion -- er, well he does, he just hides it -- and it's rare for him to do little more than offer subtle expressions. He's seldom in a particularly bad mood or even in a very good mood. While Toby doesn't necessarily bottle up her emotions, he often doesn't display them, only because the desire to do so seldom arises. He remains guarded around people he's even close to, which he can count that number of people on one hand. The tough exterior keeps the vulnerable inside protected with a shield of stoic masochism.
That's not to say, however, that he won't go out of his way to inconvenience someone he doesn't like. Toby has a tendency to be a little bit spiteful, and likes to stir shit up just because he can. It's not in his nature to fight without cause and to attack without being attacked first. This does not mean he will deflect conflict as his temper is set off as easily as a flashfire in the dry Savannah brush. Be wary if you provoke any icy responses because soon enough, his fist might be forcing your teeth down your throat. He also doesn't like to get attached to people and he tries not to stay in one place for too long, lest he want to settle down.
HISTORY
Tobias Kingston was born and raised in the city outskirts of Chicago, Illinois. His mother worked nights as a parking supervisor at O'Hare International Airport while his father, a squib who was at the time unemployed, remained at home to take care of their newborn son. Throughout his childhood, he was happy. In school, though, he was a little bit of a menace, hardly skating by with passable grades and barely displaying a willingness to learn or cooperate with teachers, he did alright. He didn't want to follow any of the rules or assignments set out for him.
Toby did get into a handful of fights. He was involved with a few rough punks he called friends, just about three of them, and they got into trouble together. After enough pointless fussing and his inability to cooperate with them, Toby’s parents left him alone, and as long as he came home at some point, his parents grew relieved and didn’t bother him anymore about his declining attendance to school and lack of appearance at home.
He wasn’t a criminal as far as they knew, and that became the passive couple’s newest standard. With his concern in what his parents thought of him deteriorating, Toby did start teaching himself more of the street smart things. Breaking into cars was the first, especially if there was a wallet in sight or anything valuable such as a new stereo sytem he could resell in there. In highschool, breaking into anything there had become easy when he started teaching himself on how to pick locks and leave no signs of his breaking and entering in lockers or teacher’s closets.
At the age of twelve, his mother passed away leaving him with a depressed father who crumbled into himself. Toby then really began to do as he pleased, and started just sitting through lectures until his father decided to stop hounding him altogether because he lost the motivation to keep up with his trouble making kid. The lenient behavior had it constructed into Toby’s brain that if he be sneaky enough, patient enough, and determined enough he will ultimately get his way. Without his mother in the picture, though, they were evicted and relocated to a shadier part of town. That was where Toby's fighting on the streets, theft and other delinquent behavior flourished. He needed to help financially provide to keep a roof over their heads, after all.
By the time he was sixteen and extremely frustrated Toby finally asked his father where the rest of the family was during their struggles. He was exhausted from working the way he was and having nothing to show for it. Turned out his father isolated himself, ashamed of his lack of magical ability despite his parents being magical. Having a brother would was a wizard didn't help either, but just the simple idea of magic being a real thing was difficult for him to wrap his head around. His knowledge of it barely scratches the surface as he just dropped it then and there.
Despite spending his teen years getting into major trouble, Toby primarily worked as a bartender once he reached his late adolescence as talking was easy for him, but he took an interest to vehicles of all kinds. Not in the way that had him collecting Hot Wheels cars at a young age, but interested enough. He started working part time in a garage located in North Chicago, enough to gain some knowledge. He went in with hardly any, so his hours were sporatic, and they taught him from scratch. He learned enough until he decided to quit and focus on his serving job (which was less hours, less demanding, and much less dirty but with more rewarding pay). The knowledge remains, however, and he uses it still to steal cart parts sell them at hiked up prices.
He lives on his own now in a decent sized apartment where he supports himself. He works as a bartender, still, but it's mostly a cover job. His real money comes in from everything else he does off the books, be it doing goods pickups and drop offs (mostly drugs), pit-pocketing, ripping atm card info, etc. It was what Toby grew up doing, and it's what he does best.
